Makena's 6 Month Update

We took Makena on the 12th for her 6 month pediatrician appointment.  We had to delay it a week because of an ear infection that needed to clear up and get out of her system before they could give her vaccines.  Ears still have a little fluid but they are getting better.

Makena now weighs 16 lb 5.1oz and is 26 inches long!  She is in the 45th percentile for weight.  She looks huge compared to Melia.  I can't imagine what a baby in the 90th percentile looks like!  She is wearing 6 month clothes and we are transitioning to 6-9 month outfits in most brands.

She has started eating solid foods.  She does great with multi grain cereals and vegetables.  She has had a few fruits and likes them too!  Melia loves helping us feed Makena.  Of course, Melia loves to eat Makena's food too.  The other day she ate an entire jar of Makena's prunes!

Makena hasn't started crawling yet, but she rolls and scoots all over the place.  She can get where she is going if she really wants too!  She can sort of sit up on her own.  The doctor says it counts, but I still like to be nearby, because she is topples easily.  Makena has a lot to say.  Melia thinks it is funny to hear Makena talk.

Makena is doing great at daycare.  The teachers love her smile and always comment on what a happy baby she is.  Of course I already knew that!

And the winner is...

Size 3!  I have known for awhile it was going to happen.  Melia is a small girl and Makena is an average size baby.  Makena is growing by leaps and bounds.  So finally it happened!  Both girls can wear the same size diaper.  Makena is at the low end of the weight range and Melia is at the high end, but techinically, they can both wear a Size 3 diaper.  I have to say it does make packing a diaper bag easier!

Giraffe Ranch Farm

We took the girls today to visit Giraffe Ranch Farm in Dade City, FL.  It is an eco-adventure about an hour and a half from our house.   The 47 acre farm is home to a wide variety of animals.

The highlight of the visit is an hour long open-air vehicle "safari" through the property.  The zebras, giraffes and ostriches come right up to the vehicle and eat out of your hand.  They had a ton of different exotic animals.  Melia even fed a camel right out of her little hand!  Makena was pretty entertained by the monkeys and their little babies.

Feeding the giraffes was really neat.  Again, Melia did a great job holding out the cabbage and letting the giraffe take it right from her hand.  When the giraffes took a break from eating, Melia helped them finish the cabbage.  She loves to eat!

We had an amazing opportunity to hand feed grapes to lemurs.   Melia ate a few of the grapes for quality control and then proceeded to put the rest of the grapes right in the lemurs mouths.  She was so well behaved and did really well.  I was honestly surprised she was so comfortable, considering she was afraid to touch the tortoise!

We also got some bird feed sticks and fed the birds.  About 100 of them in a little trailer type cage.  My mom and sister would have freaked out, but Melia did great!  Makena slept through the birds.  She was worn out by that point.

They only take a small number of people on tour each day, so it was a very relaxing tour.  The guides are the couple that own the property and they were very informative.  The own another larger ranch/farm nearby as well.  They hope to start offering tours there within the next 6-8 months.  I am sure we will take the kids on that tour as well.  This one was definately worth the drive.
