Makena's First Christmas

The month of December has been very busy in the Webb household.  We started out the month with our trip to Europe.  The weekend after we got back started the Christmas parties and holiday parades.  Mommy went back to work full time at ACS and part time at the studio.  Daddy started his paternity leave.  We were so overscheduled, that we neglected to send out Christmas cards or decorate the house.  I promise next year to schedule more time at home!!!

We saw lots of Santa this year.  The Grotto Christmas party, Breakfast with Santa (Melia and Grammy went), Cookies and Cocoa with Santa, Santa photos at JCP and who could forget the 20+ Santa's in the train station in Zurich!  Makena could care less about Santa, she was just happy being held.   Melia started to realize that Santa is pretty cool.  He gives out candy canes and presents.  She gets very excited seeing Santa from a distance.  Melia will give Santa a high five and even sit on his lap.  But getting her to smile on Santa's lap?  Well let's just say we are working on that!

Grotto Christmas Party

We attended Christmas Eve service at Church of the Ascension as the Holy Family!  Makena was the cutest baby Jesus!  After church we went to Grammy's house for some holiday time with Daddy's family.

Grandpa Ed was in the hospital for 17 days.  He got out just before Christmas.  My mom, The Neubrands, Jennifer and Michael all decided to come down and spend Christmas with Papa.  It was a packed house at The Hunter's on Christmas morning!  But it was great to have the entire family together for a surprisingly peaceful Christmas.

The best present Mommy got for Christmas was just being with family.  There is nothing better than having a loving husband and two beautiful, healthy girls.  I am so blessed.

Europe Vacation Part II

The next journey of our vacation took us by train and bus to neighboring Vaduz, Liechtenstein.  Vaduz is the capital city of this very tiny country.  We grabbed lunch in Vaduz before heading across the border to Feldkirch, Austria.  There was a great little Christmas market in town, complete with carolers (singing in English!) and gingerbread.  We found a little deli that had some indoor seating (everyone had outdoor seating with fur covered seats and lap blankets!) and grabbed a quick bite to eat.  We checked out the "old town" and took a stroll by the river before heading back to Switzerland for the night.

The next day we took a train into Konstanz Germany.  We had a great German lunch at a restaurant in town.  Christmas markets are a big deal in Europe, so we visited the one in Konstanz as well!  We took a walking tour of the city and a stroll by the Rhine River.  Melia had gotten an upset stomach at lunch, so we cut the day short and headed back.

Our final day in Engelberg we spent at Mt. Brunni.  We took the cable car to the top and played at the Yeti Park.  A great little playground in the snow - complete with an in ground trampoline!  We got a pass for their "magic carpet" and went sledding.  Chris didn't tell me until later in the day that this was his first experience sledding.  I am glad I took Melia down the hill the first time instead of a rookie!  Melia was not a fan of sledding.  I think it had more to do with the fact that she is not a fan of the cold.  For lunch we went back to the Cheese Factory and had some wonderful cheese fondue!

Our final day in Switzerland was spent in Zurich.  It rained all day.  I am glad the rain waited until the last day of our trip.  We did a walking tour of Zurich, stopped by a chocolatier, walked through the theater district and grabbed some dinner at a little restaurant.  I finally got to try some hot roasted chestnuts from one of the street vendors.  They were amazing! 

The flight home was great.  We had two rows to ourselves.  Both the girls had bassinets to sleep in and our flight attendants were great.  We got into the States and were able to catch an earlier flight to Tampa so that we didn't have to entertain the girls for 4 hours at the airport.  It was a wonderful vacation, but we are always happy to come home.  However, a cold front came through and it is just as cold in Florida at night as it was in Switzerland!  BRRRR!

2 babies x 4 countries = 8 AMAZING DAYS!

Makena took her first flight, and got her first passport stamp on our 2010 European vacation. We left Tampa headed to Zurich, Switzerland with a stop in Washington DC. At 8 weeks old, it was no big deal for Makena to sleep most of the way. Melia was our biggest worry with 11 hours of flying time. She did surprisingly well and slept most of the way from DC to Zurich.


We arrived in Zurich and caught a train to Engelberg. Melia was sooo excited by the trains! Engelberg is a small ski village in central Switzerland. We checked in to our hotel then took a stroll through the town. We visited the Cheese Factory and watched them making fresh Engelberger Klosterglocke cheese. This was both girls first time in snow, so we took them to the playground next to our hotel. Melia is definitely a Florida girl! It didn’t take long before she was shivering and saying “brrr, cold”. The time change had us all screwed up, so the first night sleep in the hotel was rough.

The next day in Engelberg we visited Mt Titlis by taking the arial cable cars. The cars stop a few times on the way up where you switch lines. The last car is called Titlis Rotair – it is a rotating cable car which you gaves you an amazing 360 degree view on the way up to the 10,000 feet top of Mt. Titlis. Once we reached the top we took the girls out to take some pictures in the snow. It was SOOO cold! We spent the rest of our time up top visiting the restaurants and shops. There are some glaciers on the mountain, so we got to take a walk through a glacier cave. A lot of ice, pretty cold but it was neat. The “season” hasn’t officially started, so the restaurants and outdoor play areas at the stops up to the top were not open yet. The snow falling is beautiful, but none of us want to live in it!

We spent Thursday visiting Lucerne. There was an art museum near the train station, so we stopped in for a quick visit before our boat trip. We took a 3 hour boat trip around Lake Lucerne. The boat stopped a few different towns along the way. Onboard we had some “snacks” - cheese sticks (not the melted mozzarella we get at home), cheese filled sausages and the most amazing apple strudel with vanilla cream sauce. Yummy!

10 Weeks Ago

Ten weeks ago Makena was born.  I can't believe how fast the time has gone by.  I return to work on Monday.  I am not ready to go back.  It is so much harder going back to work this time.  I am sure a lot of that is because I am in a different position now at work, with a different supervisor.  I really would love to stay home with both my girls.  The time just flies and I don't want to miss a minute of it!  Hopefully with the studio now we will be able to make things work so I can at least be home part time.  Keep your fingers crossed!

2 Month Check Up

Makena had her 2 month check up on November 29th. A few days early, but we wanted to get her immunizations started before our trip to Europe. She now weighs 10lb 9oz and is in the 45th percentile for weight. She is 21 inches long which puts her in the 25th percentile for height. Overall she is in the 50th percentile for babies her age. Just perfect!


Makena is not a fan of tummy time. Despite her protests, she has some tummy time daily to help strengthen her back, arm and neck muscles. She is a strong little baby and already holds her head up well. At the pediatricians office she was tucking one arm under and leaning toward her shoulder, so the doctor thinks she will probably roll over early.

She had her first round of immunizations. She was not happy when she got the shots, but hasn’t had any type of reaction. She slept a little more, but it worked out great with all the traveling we did that day.

After a week in the Michigan cold, and being around a lot of little hands, Makena picked up a little cold. She is congested and has been sneezing. We are using a nasal aspirator and steam to help clear her up. Hopefully she will get over the cold quickly. I am a strong believer that breastfeeding helps kids prevent colds and get over them faster. At least that has been my experience with Melia.

Next check up is not until 4 months as long as she remains healthy.

Thanksgiving in Michigan

My sister Lisa and I got this brilliant idea to take 5 kids in car seats on a 1200 mile road trip to Michigan for Thanksgiving. After 3 detours we finally arrived. The kids really did well until the last hour. We were all done with the car ride at that point!

We have had an overstimulating, active week so far. Grandpa and Nonna took us to the Detroit Zoo. Nonna went with us to the Festival of Trees, then we went with Grandma and Great Papa to The Henry Ford for the tree lighting event. I took the girls to the cider mill to get some real apple cider and donuts. We spent a day in Frankenmuth where we shopped at Bronners, rolled pretzels (both girls slept thru that) and enjoyed dinner at Bavarian Inn.

We have been able to introduce Makena to some family and friends while we are here too! Looking forward to turkey dinner with Grandma, dessert with Nonna and Grandpa, then some early Black Friday shopping! There is not much space left in the car, so mommy may get the deals online and stay warm in bed.

We are bringing Great Papa back to Florida to stay at Aunt Lisies over the winter. Melia has a fondness for Papa so I am sure she will be excited about our road trip home!

Dear Santa....

I have been a very good girl this year.  I heard that Mommy and Daddy may put a Fisher Price iXL under the tree for me.  I would really like some of the software to go with it (especially Handy Manny and Toy Story 3).

I love Barney and Elmo.  I don't really watch a lot of tv, but their shows are my favorites!

I eat all my vegetables, but am still pretty small.  I still wear an 18 month.  I should wear a 24 month by the summer time.  I LOVE shoes!  I wear a size 5 now, but mommy thinks I have plenty in that size.

I love to color and play pretend.  I am a good helper around the house, but mommy's broom is too big for me.

Books are still a favorite too.  We read them every night.  I love Dr. Suess books and Sesame Street books.

Mommy is going to let me help bake cookies for you (so bring lots of presents!).

One Month Update!

Mommy has been a little behind on our blog updates.  It has been a crazy month adjusting to having two adorable little girls under two!  Melia is still very much in love with her "baby".  We are getting some sleep finally and starting to get into a routine.

Makena's one month check up was on November 1st.  She is gaining weight like a champ!  She already weighs 9lb 2.5oz and is up to 20 1/4 inches long.  We are quickly phasing out the newborn clothes and moving into the 0-3 month size.  A big contrast from her big sister.  The jaundice is all gone and she is doing well medically. 

Makena is starting to be awake and alert more during the day.  We are looking forward to all of her upcoming baby milestones!

Makena celebrated her first Halloween this past weekend.  We got her a witch onesie to match the costumes Melia and Molly had.  She didn't need a "real" costume since she spent the entire night being carried by mommy!  Melia loved dressing up in her witch costume.  She loved trick or treating too!  Really, I think she just loved that mommy let her have some candy.  I gave her some fruit snacks and one lollipop.  The rest of the candy we got rid of.  The good thing about trick or treating at this age is that the candy really is out of sight, out of mind.

I am still on maternity leave from the Cancer Society, but have started working at the studio a few days a week.  We are looking forward to our upcoming trip to Michigan for Thanksgiving and our first family vacation in December!

Sesame Street Live

A few months ago I posted a blog debating if I should get tickets to take Melia to see Sesame Street Live.  The show was scheduled for October 15th (just two weeks after giving birth) so I didn't know if I would be up to it.  Lisa agreed to drive, so we got tickets to take Melia and Junior.  I am SOOO happy we decided to go!

Melia had an amazing time!  It was late for her (I was worried she would fall asleep) but she was completely engaged in the show.  She was singing and dancing in the seats.  Her eyes lit up every time a new character came out on stage.  It was fabulous! 

Now I definately want to take her to Dine with Elmo at Busch Gardens and then to Sesame Place in Pennsylvania!

Pediatrician Updates

Makena had a check up with the pediatrician on Tuesday.  At 11 days old she is gaining weight like a champ!  She already weighs 6lb 13oz!  She is growing out of some of the preemie outfits already.  Her jaundice is getting much better.  Makena's umbilical cord fell off this weekend - she has a belly button just like her sister.  She is also doing better sleeping at night.  She still cluster feeds from about 11P to 1A, but will go for 3-4 hours at a time between feedings after that.  Next pediatrician appointment on November 1st.

Melia weighs 23lbs now.  We had her hearing screened again.  The results were not really clear.  The doctor will check her ears again at her 24 month check up.  Because her speech is developing so well, the doctor doesn't think that there is a problem.

Both girls are doing well.  Melia is still in love with her baby sister.  The kisses and hugs continue!

Makena's First Week

A recap of Makena's first week in the world!

Makena was born on Friday, October 1st.  Daddy, Mommy and Makena spent the weekend at Morton Plant Hospital and came home on Monday, October 4th.

Makena was showing signs of jaundice at the hospital, so the pediatrician requested we bring her in on Tuesday for her first check up.  By Tuesday her color was getting better.  We continue to keep an eye on her, make sure she is eating frequently to help pass the billirubin and giving her some time resting in a sunny window. 

All babies lose some weight in the first few days.  Makena dropped to 5lb 13oz on Saturday, then 5lb 11oz on Sunday.  She was back up to 5lb 13oz when we were discharged.  Her weight was back up to 5lb 15oz when we were at the doctor on the 5th.  The newborn sizes are still too big for Makena.  Luckily we saved all of Melia's preemie outfits, so she has some clothes to wear.

On Wednesday we took Makena to apply for her passport!  Yes, we are already planning a family vacation.  For the record, it is not easy to get a passport photo of a 4 day old baby!

Mommy and Makena spent most of the week either at the hospital or at home.  Everyone is doing well, but Mommy is tired!  Makena has her days and nights confused, so we are working on getting that switched around.  Hopefully it won't take long!

We love having visitors and have really been enjoying the dinners that some friends have dropped off.  Aunt Lisie played taxi driver so Makena and Mommy could run errands today.  The weather has been beautiful, so it was great to get out of the house.

Melia still LOVES having a baby in the house.  She always wants to hold her, kiss her and give her hugs. 

We have another pediatrician appointment next week and will have an updated posted then.

The Webb Family of FOUR!!!

How do you say it?

It's a question I get a lot.  For both of my girls.  How do you say her name?

Makena is pronounced ma-KEN-ah.  It's Hawaiian for "abundance".  She was named after a beach and state park in Hawaii.  Kaysi was a witness at our wedding.  The girl's name Kaysi \ka(y)-si\ is a variant of Casey (Irish, Gaelic), and the meaning of Kaysi is "alert, watchful".

Melia is the name of the place we were married.  Her name is pronounced Ma-lee-ah.  It's a Hawaiian name also and means "plumeria" (which is a type of flower).  Her middle name is Kaitlynn.  It's a pretty common name so most people can pronounce it.  We spell it with two nn's because my name "Lynn" has two nn's and that's the way I want it!

One day my girls will go to Hawaii and everyone will say their names correctly.  Until then, I hope this blog helps the rest of the world out!

Sisters!

Aunt Lisie has been bringing Melia to the hospital each day to visit with Mommy, Daddy and her new baby sister.  She loves babies and seems pretty into having one of her own. 

Melia loves Makena's hats and even wore one the first day.

Melia checked out the baby's hospital bed and made sure everything was comfy.  Including giving her approval of the bulb syringe!

She loves to hold Makena.

She was even helpful when the pediatrician came in.  She told the doctor where the babies nose, eyes and mouth were (just in case the doctor wasn't sure).

So far the sisters are doing well together.  Can't wait to bring Makena home so Melia can show her around!





It's A Girl!!!

Big sister Melia is pleased to announce the arrival of her little sister, Makena Kaysi!    

Makena was born after a successful C-Section at 9:23AM on Friday, October 1st, 2010.  She weighed 6lb 1oz and is 19 1/2 inches long.  Pictures will be uploaded to Webbsyght this weekend.

We arrived at the hospital at 7AM to prep for delivery.  Lisa's friend Bonnie works the reception area at the hospital so she got us checked in to the same room we were in when Melia was born.  A high school friend is a labor and delivery nurse at the hospital.  She wasn't on duty, but left notes for my nurse to take good care of me.  It was very sweet.  (and I did get great treatment!)

I didn't get nervous about the delivery until just a few minutes before the actual surgery.  I had a great medical team at Morton Plant Hospital.  The spinal went in very quickly, but caused my blood pressure to drop very rapidly. I felt very nauseous and apparently lost a lot of color.  They gave me some medication and it only took a few minutes for me to start feeling better.

The delivery went quickly.  I was wheeled into O.R. at 8:55AM and Makena arrived a half hour later!  I had my tubes tied after the delivery. (Yes, we are done) I think that process took longer than the actual delivery.

Aunt Lisie and Grammy Webb were waiting in recovery for baby and Daddy.  I felt good after the delivery, but did end up getting sick later in the day.  Still on a liquid diet, but I expect to start eating some real food for breakfast Saturday morning.

Pain has been minimal, but I do have some abdominal discomfort.  I didn't have this sensation with Melia, so I think the discomfort is related to the tubal.

We are expected to be discharged on Monday.  We are open to visitors in the hospital and once we get home, so come on over!

22 hours from now...

We will be welcoming our new bundle of joy!  It is so strange to have something like this "scheduled".  I have definately been more productive knowing THE DATE.  But it has also made me more anxious.  I am sooo excited, yet so nervous.  I worry how Melia will react.  I know it is going to be a big change having 2 under 2 in the house. 

Chris' mom and my sister Lisa are taking turns watching Melia and cleaning my house while we are the hospital.  Lisa is coordinating meals for when we come home using this really cool website - http://www.takethemameal.com/  I think the site is brilliant!  We really are blessed to have Linda and Lisa so close by.

Our delivery has been moved up to 9AM, so we get to meet our little baby a few hours earlier!  Can you tell I am excited?!?!?!?!

The Slowest Week EVER!

Now that Baby Webb's arrival is literally days away, time seems to be standing still.  It is only 1:30P on Tuesday and it feels like it should be Friday already! 

I have to say that scheduling a delivery is a completely different experience.  It is really nice, yet strange, to be able to plan everything out.  I have had a huge list of things "to do" before baby arrives.  Knowing when to expect baby has actually made me get some of the things done on the list.   Today I even pampered myself a bit and got a pedicure and manicure.  (The manicure is important for all the pictures of me holding Baby Webb, pedicure is important for the doctors, nurses, etc... that have to look at my feet in the hospital.)  Of course, polish doesn't do much to hide the massive swelling I still have in my feet!

I have kept my schedule light at work this week, just in case someone decided to make an early appearance.  That could be why this week seems to be going soooo slowly.

House is clean, laundry is done, bags are packed, food is in the fridge.  Pretty sure we are ready!  Of course I am sure Friday when I check into the hospital I will realize there is something I wanted to get done that didn't get checked off the list. 

Last OB Appointment!

Friday was our last OB appointment!  The next time we see the doctor we will be meeting our new baby!  For a pregnancy that seemed to last forever, I can't believe it is so close now.

No ultrasound, but belly is measuring where it should.  Baby is still moving quite a bit (especially at night).  My blood pressure and everything else looked good.  I am still swollen - all day long now.  Cervix is closed and baby hasn't dropped (both good things!).  Baby is head down, just in case he/she decided to make an appearance early, this is a good thing too.

Our delivery is scheduled for 1230P next Friday.  Expect texts or emails from Lisa on Friday afternoon!

The "big girl room" transition

A few weeks ago we started the "transition" to the big girl room for Melia.  Slowly moving our stuff out of the room and slowly moving her stuff in.  We set up the toddler bed, brought in a chair to read books before bedtime, etc...  We started moving the baby stuff into the nursery and calling it "the babys room".

I have read tons of articles and books.  I know I should have started this transition sooner.  All the experts say "dont make any major changes less than 2 months before babys arrival".  But Melia is a pretty well adjusted kid, so we started the transition.  Plus, she started climbing out of her crib at night, so I wanted to get her moved before she hurt herself.

Our plan was that she could nap and play in her big girl room, and sleep in the crib at night.  The baby will be in the bassinet for a while, so I figured we have plenty of time. Molly loves the big girl bed and gets in there to nap all the time.  Melia, however, only uses the bed to play.

The past few nights Melia has been dealing with two teeth coming in.  She also spiked a temperature over the weekend (I assume because of the teeth) so sleep has not been going as well as normal.  I cave very easy when she is screaming crying so I have ended up bringing her into our bed the past few nights.  I don't think this is helping the situation with the transition.  To make things worse, last night during one of her attempts to climb out of bed, she fell and busted her lip open.  I, of course, now feel like the worlds worst mother.

So tonight, after our bed time routine, laying down on the toddler bed next to her, sitting on the chair next to her bed, etc... I decided to let her cry it out.  Not a method I am a fan of, but something had to work.  After about 20 minutes she stopped crying and is sleeping on the floor of the "big girl" room.  We will see how long she lasts there and if Mommy and Daddy get any sleep tonight.

If you have any miracle suggestions for a smooth and quick transition, I am all ears!

37 weeks

I had a check up this morning with the OB and our last growth ultrasound.  Baby is measuring about 5lb 6oz (already bigger than Melia at birth!) and is in the 19th percentile.  A big drop percentage wise from our last ultrasound.  Placenta looks small and is starting to calcify, but it is much later in the game than our placenta issues with the last pregnancy.  The doctor also said that measurements are less accurate with ultrasounds the further along in the pregnancy you get.  (I think that is strange, but it is what it is). 

Baby's heart rate was good at 143.  Mommy's blood pressure is a little higher than it has been, so I am going back on Monday to have it rechecked.  Not a huge concern, but my blood pressure is always low so they just want to stay on top of the spike.  I honestly think it is work related.  I have been trying to cram my 10 weeks of maternity leave work into my last few weeks in the office and it is getting overwhelming.

Tomorrow we are officially 2 weeks away from our scheduled delivery!  We go back next Friday for our regular appointment.

Most of the things we need are ready to bring home Baby Webb.  Bassinet is out of the attic, sheets are washed, clothing is out of storage, etc...  Still a few crucial things I need to find, but I am feeling much better about being prepared. 

Melia has been trying out all of the baby toys, swings, seats, etc... to make sure they are ready for her little brother or sister.  We set up the toddler bed in her new room, but she is still spending the nights in the crib.  It is going to be a slow transition.  We are working really hard on teaching her what is for the baby and what is for Melia.  She has started to point at things and tell me "baby" so I think it might be sinking in.

We are so excited to become a family of FOUR!

Never a dull weekend

Saturday Melia woke up with a blotchy rash all over her body.  Mainly concentrated around her waist area and under her arms, but there were spots all over.  Luckily our pediatrician has "on call" Saturday hours, so I gave them a quick call and got an appointment to bring her in. 

We ran through everything she had eaten or been in contact with and the only "suspect" was a hot dog she had on Friday night.  She has only had a few hot dogs in her entire life (I can literally tell you everyone she has had).  We have never had a reaction before, but like the doctor said, you never really know what you are getting inside a hot dog.  She said the proteins or nitrates were the possible cause of the reaction.

She told us what symptoms to look out for in case the rash was a result of a virus.  We were told to give her Benedryl and just keep an eye on her.  If things got worse, or the Benedryl didn't help then we would have to give her steroids.

We started giving her Benedryl (not an easy task!) and by the 2nd dose she had already started clearing up.  The rash is now almost completely gone.  So long story short, no more hot dogs for Melia!  (which is too bad, she barks like a dog when she eats them - hot DOGS - so cute!)

But the weekend wasn't completely wasted, we spent all day on Sunday moving Melia into her big girl room and trying to get the nursery ready for Baby Webb #2.  Melia is very excited about her Elmo room!

26 days to go!

After months of complaining that this is the longest pregnancy EVER, we are in the final countdown! 

We had another OB appointment on Thursday this week.  It is amazing how quick I can get in and out of an appointment this time around!   At this point in my pregnancy with Melia I was in an appointment with my OB or the high risk OB every three days.  Appointments took a minimum of 2-3 hours because of monitoring.  This time, I am still on an every two week check up basis and can get out in about 20 minutes.   It is reassuring to have a "textbook" pregnancy, but it feels a little strange.

Blood pressure and everything looks great.  Fetal heart rate is perfect and growth is tracking normal.  Next growth ultrasound in 2 weeks.

I feel like the Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man.  I am so swollen.  My feet are so swollen I can only wear flip flops.  I squeezed into a pair of tennis shoes today, but it was NOT pretty!  I googled all my symptoms and of course I had some horrible disorder.  I asked the doctor and she said all my tests look normal, it is just a part of being pregnant during the summer in Florida.  I haven't been able to wear my rings in weeks.  Even my nose is swollen now! (I think I look like Grandpa Joe).

Keeping my feet up as much as possible and continuing to count the days til we get to bring home our little baby!

Yes, we are done.

There are typical questions that come along in life.  When you date someone for a long time, everyone asks "when are you getting married?".  Before you leave your wedding reception, someone will ask "when are you going to have kids?".  In our case, that question quickly turned into "are you EVER having kids?".

Of course, we all know the answer to that question turned out to be "yes", it just took us a while to feel ready for kids.  During my pregnancy with Melia, the next typical life question started coming - "when are you going to have another baby?".  We knew we wanted our kids close together so it didn't take that long for an answer.

Now that we are expecting Baby Webb #2 the questions have turned to "are you going to have more?".  The answer is NO.  The other question we hear a lot is "are you sure you are done?"  And that answer is "Yes, I am sure we are done!".   Even my doctor asks at every appointment if I am sure we are done.  She asks because I am having a tubal (easy process since they will already be in there delivering the baby by C-section).

We only wanted two kids - I can't be outnumbered!  I think Chris secretly wanted an only child but there is no way that was going to happen!  We are going to be happy whether we have a boy or another girl.  So the final answer is "YES, WE ARE DONE!"

32 weeks (and 6 days, but who's counting?!)

Check up today at the OB.  We also had another growth ultrasound.  Baby Webb is now in the 41st percentile and weighs about 4lb 2oz.  The ultrasound tech said Baby Webb will probably come in between 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 pounds.  Sounds good to me!  Fetal heart rate was 138.

Just this past week I started having A LOT of swelling.  My ankles and feet look HUGE!  By the end of the day my legs look like they belong on an elephant.  They checked my urine for protein, as well as my blood pressure.  Both look normal, so they said the swelling is related to the heat (it has been a VERY hot summer!) and sitting at my desk for work all day.  I try to elevate my legs at night and have been soaking in the tub each night to reduce the swelling.  My diet has not been the best lately, so I am going to try and keep an eye on my sodium intake and drink more water as well.

Next appointment in 2 weeks and then we might move to weekly appointments.  They will do a final growth ultrasound at 36 weeks.  Time is really flying now!

A "sprinkle" for Baby Webb!

Yesterday, was my baby "sprinkle" for Baby Webb.  Just a little party to prepare for the arrival of our newest little star!  We had a "hollywood" theme for the party and everyone had a great time!  My sister Lisa did an AMAZING job!  The food was yummy, decorations were amazing and the games were sooo much fun!  We played "Who's Your Daddy?" and tried to match the crazy celebrity baby names with their famous parents. She gave out Oscar awards for the longest labor, heaviest baby, weirdest pregnancy cravings and most babies.  Of course we had to play the "dirty diaper" game since it is one of my favorites.  And I loved seeing my friends chug punch out of baby bottles!

Baby Names

We continue to stay strong and NOT find out the gender of Baby Webb #2.  I have to admit I get tempted with all of these ultrasounds.  I can't change the baby's gender and we don't have a preference.  Yes, it would be nice to have one of each.  But it would also be nice to have another girl (I have saved EVERYTHING of Melia's!).  All we care about is having a healthy baby.

So in order to be prepared for either arrival, we have baby names picked out.  Choosing a boys name was easy, because we had one picked out with Baby Webb #1. 

Christopher Joseph - we will call him CJ.  Chris has always wanted a "junior" but we have had some debates about sticking with Chris' middle name.  We compromised on Joseph for a middle name after my Grandpa Joe.

For a girl we picked Makena Kaysi.  Makena is the name of a beach (and State Park) on the island of Maui in Hawaii.  (Melia's name is also Hawaiian).  Kaysi is the name of one of our witnesses from our wedding.  Plus it kept with the MKW initials.

Development Screening

When Melia turned one we took her to a development screening at All Children's Hospital.  Read about that visit here.  They had some concerns about her hearing, as well as the number of words she was saying when we took her then.  Our pediatrician checked out her ears and was not concerned.  Since then, her vocabulary has blossomed and she is saying over 30 words.  It seems she says a new word every day!

The second screening is available at 18 months.  Although we didn't have any specific concerns, we took her back for evaluation.  Chris took her again and she did well with motor skills, language development, etc... 

Melia did not want to cooperate when they were doing the test for her ears.  They had an audiologist on site who did some additional screening and recommended she see the pediatrician for further evaluation.  A lot of the "symptoms" the audiologist asked about are things that we had associated with teething.  We have scheduled an appointment for next week with our pediatrician and will post any updates here.

30 Weeks Down!

We had our 30 week check up today.  Check ups are so much smoother the 2nd time around.  I don't have my long list of questions because we have already been through this once.  Plus things are going pretty smooth with this pregnancy, so there isn't a lot of "extra" stuff to deal with.

Baby's heart rate is in the 130's.  I am gaining weight like a champ!  Not sure if that is a good thing anymore.  I am officially at the weight I was when I delivered Melia, and I still have 9 weeks to go!

No ultrasound this time.  We will have another growth u/s in 2 weeks then again at 36 weeks.  Right now I am measuring big, but that really doesn't mean anything.  I measured big with Melia and she was tiny!

And the best news... I passed the one hour glucose test!  Yeah!  So happy I can skip the 3 hour test this time around!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

Melia is OBSESSED with shoes!  Her shoes, my shoes, everyones shoes!  For a child that always takes her shoes off every time she gets in a car seat or stroller, I am not sure where this obsession comes from.  I know she doesn't get it from me!

Of course she loves to try on Mommy and Daddy's shoes.  She also now loves to wear her own shoes in the house at all times.  A few times recently, she has put shoes on after she gets dressed for bed.  She fights me when I try to take them off, so I have even let her wear them to bed a couple times! (I do go in and take them off once she is asleep).

She doesn't even care whose shoes she is wearing.  At swim lessons she saw peoples flip flops sitting by the pool and she thought she would try those on!  It is cute to see her walking around in big people shoes, as long as I know whose shoes they are!

Let's just hope this shoe obsession is a temporary phase.  Daddy's pocketbook is not going to be happy if she keeps this up!

Let the countdown begin!

28 week check up today.  We had another ultrasound for growth.  Baby is about 2 lb 8 oz.  Baby has dropped to the 49th percentile.  Ok with me, I was a little scared of having a big baby!  Placenta, fluids, etc.. all look great!

Fetal heart rate was 135 bpm.  This is the lowest it has been during the entire pregnancy.  Baby #2 has had much higher heart rates than Melia did.  Todays reading was right on with where Melia was at.  There are some old wives tales about fetal heart rate being an indicator of gender.  I don't really buy into those old wives tales.  If you went through a list of them with my last pregnancy, I would have had a hermaphrodite.

I am still feeling well, but have been having a lot of trouble sleeping.  I have horrible pregnancy congestion which makes it hard to breath laying down.  I also can not find a comfortable position to sleep in.  I just keep telling myself "11 more weeks!".

Which brings me to the best news from todays appointment... We have a delivery date!  We scheduled our C-Section for October 1, 2010!!!  That day is exactly 39 weeks (they won't deliver me before hand unless there is an issue).  We scheduled with the doctor that delivered Melia. (there are 4 docs in the practice, so I had my pick) I was really happy with her.  The delivery is scheduled for 12:30PM.  Good news, I get to sleep in and take Melia to daycare like a normal day.  Bad news is, I am going to be hungry.  No food after midnight.  I will be planning a nice large dinner for 11:45PM the night before!

We are so excited to finally have a date on the calendar.  Now the official countdown begins!

Opening night seats are only $12.  I remember going to see Sesame Street Live when I was little.  It was so much fun, I know Melia would have a blast.  The problem is Baby Webb #2 will be appearing a week or two before the show, so I don't know if I will have the energy to take Melia.

One Hour Glucose Test

This morning was my one hour glucose test for Gestational Diabetes.  A standard test performed around 28 weeks whether you have a personal/family history or not.  It's a simple test.  Drink a container of sugary orange drink, wait an hour, get your blood drawn. 

During my pregnancy with Melia they told me I didn't have to fast, just don't eat a sugary breakfast.  I had a bagel with peanut butter the morning of the test.  It was enough to put me a few points above the goal number so I had to have the 3 hour fasting glucose test.  It was not fun. 

So this time, I fasted and am hoping for a good number when the results come in.  I have an OB appointment next week and should get the results then.  I just hope the yummy (and HUGE!) brownie I had for dessert last night doesn't throw off the results! Wish me luck! :)

18 Month Check Up!

Today was Melia's 18 month check up with the pediatrician.  She FINALLY weighs over 20 pounds!  20lbs 15.4 oz to be exact!  This puts her in the 8th percentile for weight.  She is 30 1/2" tall (20th percentile).  Yes, she is a skinny little girl!  The doctor wasn't overly concerned about her weight because she continues to gain steadily.  She eats well, has regular bowel movements and is healthy.  I think she is just VERY active.

We continue to feed her (and she loves to eat) healthy foods.  Fresh fruit, veggies, whole grains, etc...  The doctor did recommend keeping her on whole milk once she turns two.  They usually recommend kids go down to 2% or 1% because of obesity problems in this country.  Luckily, that doesn't seem to be an issue for Melia.

Melia is developing well in all other areas.  She sleeps and naps well.  She is always learning new things and her vocabulary grows almost daily.  She is definitely developing her own personality and independence! 

Melia loves to brush her own teeth.  Really, she just chews on the toothbrush, but it is a start.  She fights me when I want to brush her teeth.  That continues to be a challenge.  Maybe if she sees Elmo go to the dentist she will cooperate! :) It's worth a shot!  The pediatrician recommended a few pediatric dentists in the area so she can go when she turns two.  Our dentist sees children, so they might be an option.  They did recommend we bring her in during our next cleaning appointment so she can see what it is like, practice sitting in the dental chair, etc...  I will keep you posted on how that turns out!

Two shots at this visit - Hepatitis A and a DTAP booster.  She was not happy.  I can see this is going to get harder as she gets older.  When she was a baby she didn't realize they were coming and didn't freak out when the nurse walked in the room.

Our next check up is not until 24 months.  Hopefully by then she will forget the shots and be over her little stranger anxiety stage.  Until then, we will keep visiting the doctor with Elmo!

Disney's Hollywood Studios

We took Melia to visit Disney's Hollywood Studios this weekend.  We have had a lot of rain the past few days, so we were debating going or skipping the planned trip.  Luckily for us, the weather cooperated and we had a great day at the park.  One little shower around lunch time gave us a perfect excuse to stop and eat lunch.  (I was really excited that all of the meals offer healthy sides like apple slices and carrot sticks.  Melia LOVES apples!)

We learned early on that visiting theme parks post baby is a different experience.  Melia was a trooper!  She napped in the car on the way over to Disney and then took a short nap during one of the shows.  The rest of the day she really enjoyed herself. 

She loved the Playhouse Disney show and was mesmerized during Beauty and the Beast.  To my surprise, she loved the American Idol Experience.  Of course her favorite part of the show was the light up voting buttons!  We saw quite a few shows while we were there.  The timing never seemed to work out to get on any rides, but there weren't a lot we were planning to do with her anyway. 

We sat on the parade route to catch the Block Party Bash.  Being the adorable little girl that she is, Melia caught the eye of one of the Disney Cast Members.  The Cast Member moved us to a roped off area where we could sit on some stairs right where the parade stopped for the actual performances.  We were up close and personal with some of the monsters from Monsters, Inc Monsters, Inc. (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
I thought it was great, but Melia freaked out a little bit when one of the monsters reached out to touch her.

After the park closed we checked into a hotel for the night.  We were all exhausted and ready for bed EARLY!  Seeing the park with Melia was an entirely new experience.  I can't wait for future Disney trips!

Our Little Mermaid

Melia LOVES the water.  We have taken her to the pool and some splash parks in the area and she has a blast.  She has NO fear of the water either.  Since Mommy is a little paranoid, we decided to enroll her in parent/child swim lessons.  The city pool offers an 8 week program that meets twice a week.  Finally, we found a program that is offered after work hours!

This week we had our first two "lessons".  Really, all we have done so far is play around a little in the pool to get her comfortable with the water.  (not that she wasn't comfortable before!).  We have worked on blowing bubbles, getting into the pool safely, kicking, etc...  I am not sure she has really learned anything we couldn't teach her on our own, but I assume every little bit she learns helps.

The "Guppy" class for 3 and  4 year olds is held at the same time as our lesson.  Those children take their lessons without Mommy and Daddy.  There was a ton of crying and screaming coming from that end of the pool.  My biggest goal with these swim lessons is to make sure Melia is comfortable in the water and doesn't develop a huge phobia. 

After all, I really want to be able to take her on some snorkeling, swim with the dolphins, etc... excursions on future cruises! :)

Recalls

It seems lately that everything made for babies is being recalled.  First it was the sling (had one), then it was a toy car (Grammy had one), now our crib.  Luckily, no children have died in these cribs, but it is still a safety concern.

Does anyone make anything safe anymore?  Or is everything cheaply made and manufactured by people making $0.10 an hour?

I went online and requested a repair kit.  Until it is received, in 6-8 weeks, Evenflo suggests I find alternative sleeping arrangments for my child.  Obviously, people at Evenflo don't have children!  Otherwise they would know that kids sleep better in their own crib/bed.  And that putting a toddler in a pack and play for 6-8 weeks is not the best sleep solution.  Maybe they assume that people have spare cribs laying around.  In case you were wondering, I do not.

25 weeks down!

Today we went to the OB for a growth ultrasound and our regular exam.  FHR was 166 - faster than it has ever been.  Baby was VERY active this morning!  Baby is measuring about 1 lb 9 oz.  This puts Baby Webb #2 in the 61st percentile.  This is slightly larger than the average baby, but for us this is huge!  Melia has never been above the 15th percentile.

Mommy is doing well.  Blood pressure looks good and I have been feeling great.  I feel huge, but that is to be expected.  We go for my glucose test in 3 weeks and back for another US and OB visit in 4 weeks.  Then we move to appointments every 2 weeks.  Things finally feel like they are moving along!

Mommy of 2 Confession

I have a confession to make: I keep forgetting I’m pregnant. No, I’m not kidding. Yes, that probably makes me a front runner in the competition for Worst Pregnant Mom Ever.


With Melia, I knew exactly how far along I was at any given moment, right down to the day, hour and minute. I knew which food to compare her approximate size to (sesame seed, walnut, peach, grapefruit, etc.) I spent my days on the internet, looking up pregnancy and parenting websites, shopping for diapers, researching strollers and car seats and swaddling blankets.

This time, I only know how pregnant I am when the doctor reminds me at our monthly appointment. I’m usually too busy to pay attention to the physical changes, and yes that includes the exhaustion, and the fact that my bras don’t fit anymore. I’m breaking rules left and right, like blue cheese in my salads and brie on my crackers. My first pregnancy was all baby, all the time. This one is just as important, but Baby Webb #1 still occupies my mind and thoughts 99% of the day.

Poor Baby Webb #2. I promise to try harder and make you feel special, too. You are doing a really good job at giving me an occasional jab to remind me that I really am pregnant.  Especially when your big sister is sitting on top of you.

Pregnancy is always a blessing and a miracle, even if I need to be reminded of that more often this time around.

Babywearing

I am a huge fan of babywearing.  It is an easy way for me to hold Melia and still be somewhat productive.  I love the convenience babywearing has given me when traveling by not having to deal with a stroller.  Babywearing has also been a convenient way to nurse when we are out in public.

Before Melia was born we got a Baby Bjorn carrier and an Infantino Sling Rider.
I have definitely gotten a lot of use out of the Baby Bjorn.  In fact, we are still using it when we are out and about.  It has been great to wear her when she needs a nap (she rarely falls asleep in the stroller).  It also puts her at a good level to see things when we are visiting places like the aquarium and zoo.  The carrier was great to use even as a newborn because of the extra head/neck support (although I did have to wait awhile until she weighed 8lbs to start using it).  It was tricky to learn how to nurse in this carrier and I wouldn't have been able to nurse her as a newborn in it.  The Baby Bjorn also doesn't give you the option of wearing her on your back.  Not that I have done a lot of this yet, but it still would be a nice option.





The Infantino Sling Rider was a favorite before Melia became really active.  It was really easy to discreetly nurse when she was an infant and it was easy for her to sleep in.  I also learned how to use it as she got bigger as a "seat".  I always felt like I needed to support her with one arm, so it wasn't completely hands free like the Baby Bjorn.  The Sling Rider was actually recalled a few months ago, so Baby #2 will not be using this carrier.

As part of the Sling Rider recall, Infantino provided a replacement of their new carrier the Wrap and Tie.
I just used the Wrap and Tie for the first time last week.  At first it was a little weird, but I have to say I really like it.  The instructions say you can use it up to 35lbs, so Melia still has plenty of opportunities.  The Wrap and Tie even has an option for back-wearing (although Melia wasn't really happy in this position).  I don't think it provides enough support for a newborn, so Baby #2 may have to wait a while for this carrier.  Mine came in their "khaki" color.  Chris isn't a fan, but I don't think any carriers really make a fashion statement.







We also have a Moby Wrap.  This carrier seams to be a favorite among babywearing parents and has been highly recommended by one of my friends.  Moby Wrap claims it can hold up to 35lbs, but the fabric is really stretchy, so I don't feel like it will give enough support to a toddler.  I haven't actually tried it yet with Melia.  I think I am holding out for the new baby.  From all the research I have done (between books and the internet I may be worse than Carol!) the wrap seems like it will be great for kangaroo care, nursing and babywearing while chasing around a very active toddler.  Plus there are a TON of different ways to hold the baby in the carrier.  Another perk, this wrap has UV protection in the fabric (I am a crazy helicopter mom when it comes to sun safety).

So that's my 2 cents on baby carriers.  I am going to use mine with both my kids as long as I can.  I won't be able to carry them forever, so I need to take what I can while I still have the chance!

Huggies Overnights vs Pampers Extra Protection

When Melia finally started sleeping through the night, I thought a switch to "nighttime" diapers would be beneficial.  Her diapers were getting so full at night and the regular diapers just were not keeping all the wetness off of her skin. 

I started to look for nighttime diapers and had a hard time finding a store that carried the Pampers Extra Protection.  I had a coupon (I love coupons!) for Huggies Overnights, and despite my previous post about Huggies I decided to give them a try. 

I love Huggies Overnights.  They do a great job keeping wetness away and don't feel like a big soggy mess when Melia gets up in the morning.  We have been using them consistently at night and I really think it has helped keep the rashes away.












I finally got a coupon for Pampers Extra Protection and found them at Target.  I brought them home yesterday and decided to give them a try.  At first glance, they were much lighter weight than the Huggies Overnights.  Side by side they looked and felt just like her Pampers Cruisers but the characters on the design were wearing pajamas.  I assumed there had to be a difference I just couldn't see.

I was wrong.  When she woke up this morning her diaper was drooping to her knees and she felt wet.  I honestly think they packaged the Pampers Cruisers in a Pampers Extra Protection box and expected me not to notice!

We will give it one more try tonight, but I think I may just owe an apology to Huggies!

Memorial Day Weekend in Michigan

Melia and I took a trip to visit the family in Michigan over Memorial Day Weekend.  It was a short visit, but we had a great time.

On Saturday, Nonna and Grandpa took us to the Detroit Zoo.  Melia loves animals and really enjoyed all of the birds.  She had a great time chasing a duck around where we ate lunch!  (She also learned very quicly that Grandpa is a sucker for her smile and will pick her up so she doesn't have to ride in the stroller.)

On Sunday, we went with Grandma, Great Papa, Uncle Mike, Aunt JJ and Uncle Ian to the Detroit Tigers game.  It was a beautiful day and we had great seats.  Uncle Mike and I took Melia on the ferris wheel - she loved it! 

Monday we went to the Dearborn Memorial Day Parade.  Aunt JJ and Uncle Mike were both in the parade.  Melia really enjoyed the parade.  She loved the flyovers, the music from the marching bands and just waving to people passing by.

We also got to spend some time visiting with Great Grandma Marge and Great Papa Ed.  I am so happy that they are still around to watch her grow.  She didn't have enough time to really warm up to Grandma, but she really loved playing with all of her stuffed animals!

The weekend went by so quickly and we are both still tired.  But the exhaustion was well worth the memories of spending time with grandparents, aunts and uncles in Michigan.  We will be back again (hopefully for a little longer) over Thanksgiving!

21 Weeks Down, 19 To Go!

Yesterday we saw the pernatologist for an upper level ultrasound.  Because of Melia's growth restriction, we are monitoring this pregnancy a little closer.  The upper level U/S is very detailed.  They checked the babies heart, kidneys, brain, spine, etc...  They look for any birth defect that can be picked up on ultrasound.  Baby Webb looks great!

Baby Webb is developing normally and weighs about 14 oz.  Seems small to me, but they said this is normal. They did check gender just for development, but we didn't look.  All we want is a health baby!  Of course this week I think we are having a boy.  (Last week Baby Webb was a girl).

Today was my regular check up with my OB.  Pretty normal.  Heart beat is in the 140's and everything looks good so far.  They will schedule ultrasounds at all of my normal OB visits from here on to check growth.  Next update in 4 weeks!
